I was poised to write about how horrible 2009 has been and how I’m glad to see it go, but when I thought about all this year has brought, I realized that I’ve let a few recent negative experiences color my perception of the rest of the year. While it could have been better, it wasn’t all bad and, on the writing front, I had more success than failure.
I won’t dwell on the failures. The successes are much more interesting. I had my first short story publication in over fifteen years with “Bringing up Bobby” in the April issue of The Absent Willow Review. I finished the first draft of No Humans Involved. I also completed a new short story, finished the first draft of another, and made significant progress on a third.
Fiscally, 2009 was unpleasant, but I had it better than many. We had money enough for all the necessities and were never in danger of going under.
It was a good year for my career. Although my company had layoffs and mandatory furloughs, my job was never in danger. And if we had to take a pay cut, at least they gave us days off to go with it, so it could have been worse. I joined the American Society for Quality and earned a new certification. My boss is thrilled with my performance and I enjoy what I do.
So I can’t say 2009 was a bad year. But I can say that I’m looking forward to a better 2010.

Good for you. And I remember you had a question for me about my plotting process. Only I can’t remember what it was, or when you asked it! (Note: better organizational skills for 2010). Ask again, because I knew it would make a good blog topic.

Gosh, I can’t remember exactly what my question was, either! I recall thinking that you had answered it in a subsequent post, though. I’ll have to see if I can find the original question.
