Like so many people in the IT industry, I fell into my career almost by accident. We like fiddling around with computers and discover that someone will pay us to do it. I started out as a lab tech at USF, then got into network administration and engineering. Technical writing for a software company came next, and ultimately I migrated into software quality assurance. Although I made the choices along the way, there was no master plan, no concrete goal.

But events of the last week or so have crystallized my thinking about my career. I’ve realized that a) I enjoy what I do and b) I’m very good at it. And while I arrived at this career by chance, it would behoove me to start planning where I’m going from now on.
